MacKillop

Mary MacKillop (1842-1909) was born in Melbourne but much of her early life was spent in rural Victoria and South Australia. While she was in Penola she met Fr. Julian Tenison Woods who gave her much assistance in establishing the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, a uniquely Australian Order, in 1866. The Josephites were teachers of the poor living close to the lives of those they served and moving wherever they were needed. The Josephites had a huge influence on education in Australia including establishing St Thomas More’s in Launceston.

MacKillop - Barry

Archbishop William Barry (1872-1929) was the fourth Archbishop of Hobart from 1926-1929. He gave much support to St Patrick's College during difficult financial times.

MacKillop - More

Saint Thomas More (1478-1535) was one of the great humanists of the Renaissance period. He had a brilliant intellect and proved invaluable to King Henry 8th as a lawyer and diplomat. However when he refused to take the oath repudiating papal supremacy over the Church in England he earned the enmity of the king. He would not betray his conscience and was executed for his beliefs. He was canonised in 1935 by Pope Pius XI.
