Nagle

Nano Nagle (1718-1784) was the foundress of the Presentation Sisters and a pioneer of Catholic education in Ireland. She came from a privileged background but was appalled by the oppression and enforced ignorance of the poor. In 1752 she began her life’s work by opening a school for Catholics in Cork. Her work spread and in 1775 she established the Sisters of the Presentation to carry this on. The Presentation Sisters established Sacred Heart College in Launceston in 1873.

Nagle - Young

Sir Guilford Young (1912-1988) was ordained a priest in Rockhampton and became the auxiliary Bishop of Canberra prior to being appointed Archbishop of Hobart in 1955. He was closely associated with the establishment of St Patrick’s College on its present site in 1958 and remained a good friend of the College sitting on its Governing Council and taking a keen interest in its activities and growth.

Nagle - Rochester

Saint John Fisher (1469-1535) was Bishop of Rochester from 1505-1535. He was a renowned scholar and had been elected Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University. He became the target of Henry 8th’s wrath by publicly attacking the validity of the King’s proposed divorce from Catherine of Aragan. He was the Queen’s chief supporter and for this he was executed. He was canonised by Pope Pius XI in 1935.
