Rice

Edmund Ignatius Rice (1762-1844) was an educationalist and the founder of the Christian Brothers. He came from a relatively wealthy background in Ireland but soon after the death of his wife he decided to devote himself to the education of poor boys at a time when their Catholic faith was under threat. He concentrated on strengthening commitment to the Catholic faith and qualifying students for secure and satisfying employment. The Christian Brothers established St Patrick’s in Launceston in 1919.

Rice - Chisolm

Caroline Chisholm (1808-1877) was one of Australia’s greatest women. She first came to Australia in 1838 with her husband who was an army officer. She was shocked by the situation that many poor women and families found themselves in when they arrived in Sydney. She set out to improve the conditions on board ships bringing people to Australia and organised help for them in finding accomodation and employment once they arrived. For this work she became known as “the emigrants’ friend” .

Rice - Bourke

The Bourke family was one of the greatest benefactors of Catholic schools in Launceston at the beginning of the 20th century. They gave generously to Sacred Heart and with D.H. Connolly and P. Sheehan they were co-founders of the York Street campus of St Patrick’s College.
