Principal's Message

Welcome to St Patrick's College

Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

By Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

A very warm welcome to the 2025 College year to you all. Welcome to our returning students, families and staff and a special welcome to our new students, families and staff.

Over the past weeks, we have welcomed new staff, new students across Years 8 -12, and 280 new Year 7 students. Along with our staff and students we are of course welcoming many new families. I hope that each new community member feels welcome and is open to embracing membership of our St Patrick’s College community. It is hard to believe that we are already at the end of Week 3.

I wish to thank each family for the way students have been prepared for their return to the College. Our start has been very calm, students are well presented, have been respectful and are engaged in their learning. Of course this needs to continue across the year.

A positive family and school relationship is such an important factor in ensuring that students have a successful time at school. I encourage all of you, whether you are new to the College, or in your final year with us, to ensure that you have full access to Schoolbox and that you attend important events during the year including Parent Teacher Events, Subjection Selection Evenings and other opportunities where we celebrate student progress and achievements.

Can I strongly encourage you that, if you are not on Schoolbox, you make it a priority to gain access, as this is where all our College communications are shared and where your child’s learning is at your fingertips. If you are having issues please visit our College Contact Page for support.

We know that when parents/guardians are engaged, students are more engaged and generally have better attendance and success at school. Attendance at school is a problem across Australia. When students feel supported, we know that their attendance is better. We ask you to please support us in ensuring that your child is at school everyday, unless they are unwell. Everyday matters for your child, everyday matters for learning and for wellbeing. We look forward to supporting each other as we strive to reach our goal of 90%+ Attendance across the school year.

As a Catholic Education Tasmania (CET) School, we operate under the Policies of CET and under the Protocols of our College. All Policies and Protocols and our CET Feedback Portal can be viewed through Schoolbox or on our webpage. I encourage you to view these documents and support us in ensuring that students meet our expectations.

Our staff are fully committed to ensuring our students have the opportunity to be the best they can be. You can contact staff through Schoolbox when you need to touch base with them. We value the wellbeing of all our staff and ask that you be mindful of their right to disconnect and allow them to enjoy their own family and personal time outside College hours. Staff will read and respond to emails and queries between 8:30am and 5:00pm only. Please always allow 24-48 hours for staff to respond to your enquiries.

At our Academic Assembly at the end of Week 2, we had the opportunity to celebrate those who achieved academic success in 2024. This Assembly was an opportunity to celebrate our 2024 Year 12 students - in particular the 28 students who achieved ATARs of 90+. Our Year 11 students, who achieved highly, were also recognised, as well as students from Year 7 2024 - Year 10 2024 who received Academic Honours.

Congratulations in particular to our College Dux from 2024, Gabriella Smith. Gabriella addressed students at the Assembly, inspiring us to do what we love. Congratulations to Gabriella, Owen Millar and Tumai Bennet who were recognised in the Top 100 students in Tasmania and to Gabriella and Owen, who received Outstanding Academic Awards from the Governor of Tasmania.

We are all looking forward to a fantastic year. As our STEM Centre nears completion the excitement of moving into these innovative teaching and learning spaces is rising. We are also looking forward to the increased ease of moving around our campus. With all progress there are challenges and our staff and students have been resilient in dealing with the inconveniences of a large building site in the middle of the College. We will keep you posted on the upcoming timelines as the completion date of the project comes closer.

Many co-curricular events are already underway. If your student is not engaged in any activities, please encourage them. We know that being involved in College life grows connections, and growing connections is so important for feeling good about yourself and others. Please mark Wednesday 30 April (Opening Night) - Friday May 2 in your calendar and purchase tickets to come along to see MIDNIGHT - The Cinderella Musical presented by St Patrick’s College.

ARE YOU A VOLUNTEER AT ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE OR INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING?

In order to volunteer at the College, you must have a valid WWVP Card and complete a Short Safety Briefing. This is for all volunteering, including coaching a sports team. If you don’t already have a volunteer WWVP, you can apply by accessing this link: WWVP Application Process

Thank you for choosing St Patrick’s College. Have a great week!

Senior School Report

Mrs Rachael Holloway, Head of School – Middle School

Ms Rachael Holloway, Head of School – Senior School

Change can be difficult. Especially when you have been looking forward to something and it is seemingly taken away from you. This has been the case for some of our Year 11 and 12 students in regards to lockers. Previously, most Senior students looked forward to having their lockers in the Edmund Rice Centre, while Year 10 students had their lockers in the Brady Wing. This year we have allocated lockers according to House groups. While still in the Senior School buildings, students have their lockers as close to their Tutor as possible, with Year 10 - 12 students combined. The reasoning behind this was to assist Year 10 students with their transition and integration into the Senior School. Our early observations suggest this has been quite successful. Our Year 10 students are ‘hanging out’ in all parts of the Senior School, not feeling constrained to the Brady Wing. In the coming weeks, we will seek feedback from all Senior students on how they are feeling about their start to the year. It will be interesting to hear what impact this change has had.

We commenced the year again with the Year 11 and 12 ‘Taster Day’, where students attended a single period of each of their classes. This day is proving to be successful in ensuring a smooth start to the year for students, as it enables them to make early subject changes, if required, minimising the impact on their learning.

As humans, one of our basic needs is a sense of belonging or connection. A sense of belonging comes from being involved in all aspects of a community. In the coming weeks there are a number of key College events that will provide students with the opportunity to connect with their peers and build a feeling of belonging. The first of these is next week’s Senior School Athletics Carnival. Students will have the opportunity to compete in a range of events, as well as support their peers and cheer on their House mates. Other significant College events this term include: St Patrick’s Day, Retreat, and the Swimming Carnival.

Students wearing their uniform with pride and presenting themselves in a neat and tidy manner is another important way in which students identify as members of the St Patrick’s College community. However, we are also aware that our students are developing their own sense of identity. It is with this in mind that we have made the alteration to the uniform expectations in relation to facial hair. Senior School students may have a neat and tidy moustache. The rest of the face and neck must be clean-shaven.

In the 2025 Senior School Welcome Letter you were provided with the email address of each member of the Senior School Leadership Team. I would like to reiterate that if you or your child has any concerns or questions, please never hesitate to contact us.

Middle School Report

Mr Cameron Ivory, Head of School - Middle School

By Mr Cameron Ivory, Head of School - Middle School

The Middle School at St Patrick’s College has had a great start to 2025. It has been so wonderful to welcome our new Year 7s and they have made such an amazing and positive start to their secondary education here at St Pat’s. They have navigated their way through a myriad of new challenges and new experiences… conquering their locks and organising their lockers, meeting new teachers and new people, and simply making their way through the College to classes, activities, Tutor and assemblies. We are so proud of the way they have done so. Many have already begun to wholeheartedly Participate in our Community, Be a Learner, and Show Respect. We look forward to them continuing on with the excellent start they have made on their journey with us at the College.

It was great to see and meet so many parents and guardians at our Meet the Tutor and Meet the Core Teachers evening too. Building relationships and a positive community are so important to us here at the College and we thank you for helping us to foster and develop these. Our Year 8s have also made a pleasing start to the year. They are now the leaders within our Middle School and we have spoken to them about the role they have in leading by example. Our Year 7s need positive role models and they will be looking towards our Year 8s for this. We know they will step up to the challenge and show leadership in everything that they do and say.

Welcome everyone and all the best for the year ahead.

Administration & Community

2025 Uniform Changes

By Mrs Kim McInnes, Deputy Principal – Administration & Community

St Patrick’s College students show their belonging and loyalty to our school community by correctly wearing the College Formal and Physical Education uniforms with pride. High standards of uniform wear and grooming make an important statement to the wider community about the College and our commitment to proudly representing ourselves. There are a diverse range of opportunities offered to St Patrick's College students with regards to our uniform, designed to meet the individual needs of our students. We thank our students for the exceptional way that they have started the year with most students representing the College well.

In 2025 some further changes have been made to the uniform:

Girls Uniform

  • In summer, girls are permitted to wear the striped short sleeved shirt with their shorts.

College Socks
  • A shorter version of the grey sock is available to be worn with the shorts.

Facial hair

  • Senior boys (Years 10-12) are permitted to have a neat moustache only. The rest of the face must still be clean shaven.

For the full uniform protocol please see this link. The College Sport Matrix can be accessed here.

There are, however, some non-negotiable areas that some students still need to work on. We draw your attention particularly to the following and ask for your support here:

Make-up

  • Natural base foundation and natural eye makeup only are permitted.

  • Heavy eye makeup, blush, lipstick and nail polish must not be worn with the school uniform.

Jewellery

The following items are permitted:

  • A simple wristwatch

  • One simple neck chain, gold/silver bracelet and one gold/silver ring

  • Simple gold/silver sleepers or studs, including diamond or pearl earrings no greater than 8mm in diameter. Drop earrings are not to be worn. No more than two ear piercings per ear.

  • Any facial piercing must not be worn to College. Students are permitted to wear non-visible retainers.

Hair

  • Hair should be well groomed and neatly cut, with no extremes of colour or style.

  • Long hair (to collar length) must be tied completely back.

Blazer

  • The College blazer is to be worn to and from the College unless otherwise directed, including to Tutor group every day.

  • Students are to wear their blazers to all formal assemblies and Masses at the College.

PE uniform

  • Year 7, 8 and 10-12 students may only wear the Physical Education uniform to and from school on Thursdays. Year 9 students may only wear the Physical Education uniform to and from school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  • Additionally, the Physical Education uniform can be worn on other days (such as Reflection Days) when formally advised by the College.

  • The College House coloured polo top is required to be worn at all House events, including all Carnivals, Charity Days and Rite Journey Ceremonies (Year 9 only).

  • At all other times, the formal College uniform is to be worn.

Thank you all for your support of this important aspect of our College life.

SchoolBench - New This Year!

SchoolBench logo

SchoolBench is being introduced during 2025 for staff and families at the College, with a staged rollout over the course of the year. The SchoolBench suite allows staff to capture, catalogue and share images of students participating in College events and activities. This is especially necessary where a College photographer is not able to attend, for example, on school camps and excursions.

The SchoolBench Mobile App enables St Patrick’s College staff to capture images of students, at the same time ensuring that student images are not stored staff personal devices. All images are passed through a curation process, applying recorded consent for the publishing of a child’s images and name, provided by families at enrolment.

Later in the year, the St Patrick’s College community will have access to SchoolBench Portal+ through Schoolbox. This will allow parents to view any images of their child at College events or activities, when they are published.

Portal+ will also contain Collections of images from key College events, that will be visible to parents, staff and students.

With deep respect, St Patrick's College acknowledges the Tasmanian Aboriginal Community as the traditional and ongoing custodians of this land. We recognise their connection to the land, seas, air and waterways of lutruwita, and commit ourselves to the ongoing journey of reconciliation.
