SAINT MARY OF THE CROSS MACKILLOP

We have eight Values at St Patrick’s College. Catholic Identity, Compassion, Stewardship, Excellence and Endeavour, Individuality, Leadership, Relationships and Social Justice.  If each of us strived to live out these values on a daily basis, I think we would then demonstrate the qualities of a good person. St Mary of the Cross MacKillop certainly held these values close.

A particular value that comes to mind when thinking about St Mary of the Cross, is that of Social Justice. Mary devoted her life to ensuring that children, particularly from poor and rural families, were able to access a holistic Catholic education.  Mary was an advocate for young people, a trailblazer of her time and a leader who continually advocated so that underprivileged children had fair access to education.

On Tuesday August 8, we celebrated the feast of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.  This day is an opportunity to celebrate the important role that she played in bringing education to children in our country.  MacKillop House also celebrated Mass to acknowledge the Feast Day.

St Mary MacKillop, along with Fr Julian Tenison Woods, founded the Sisters of St Joseph. We recognise Mary of the Cross MacKillop as one of the charisms we follow at St Patrick’s College.

As a College, we continue to follow in the footsteps of St Mary MacKillop and our other founding order charisms, Blessed Edmund Rice, Nano Nagle, and Fr Julian Tenison Woods. They had a desire to help others and to enrich the lives of young people through education.

Imagine our local community and the broader world if each of us followed the mantra of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop:

'Never see a need without doing something about it.'

Within the College, we continue to demonstrate our concerns for social justice through our outreach programs of Ascent and Edmund Rice Camps, as well as through the numerous House days, activities and fundraisers that each House consistently engages in and strives to educate us on.

Our students repeatedly remind us of the needs of the world around us and we see them striving to make a difference in the lives of those who are marginalised, and in the local and broader community.

In just a few weeks, our Year 12 students will be participating in the annual Lap It Up (LIU) challenge where they will run, swim and ride for 24 hours. LIU provides the opportunity for our College community to put our Mission and Values into action by raising funds, generating awareness, and reminding us why it is important to support others and how this makes a significant and meaningful impact.  2023 marks the 15th year of this event.  I hope you may be able to support our students in their endeavour to continue in the footsteps of our Founders as they participate in this fantastic occasion.

FUTURE PATHWAYS

Over the last several weeks, a large percentage of our Year 10 and 11 students and their parents/guardians have taken the opportunity to sit down with a member from our Senior School staff or Future Pathways team and map out their subject choices and career pathways for the next few years.

Furthermore, Subject Selection Evenings across the Senior School, Croagh Patrick and Middle School have proved to be a massive success this week. These nights provide valuable information to students and families to assist and support them in selecting subjects for 2024.

Our Future Pathways team does an exceptional job in guiding and supporting our young people. Several of our students who have been seeking Traineeships have recently been assisted by the team in gaining full time Apprenticeships or School-based Apprenticeships. Congratulations to these students and thank you to our staff for supporting our students with their career choices.

I am grateful to all our staff who provide our community with such fantastic support and knowledge in order to allow our students to make informed decisions about their futures.

STUDENT VOICE

Hearing the voice of our students is extremely important.  This year we have allowed students across the College to wear their PE uniform. Middle School and Senior School can now wear this uniform on Thursday, and at Croagh on Tuesday and Thursday.  Students should wear their formal uniform on all other days.

Furthermore, many of our students have communicated that they dislike wearing stockings during the winter months.  In response to this, we are allowing students to wear the College lemon socks (or white for Year 12) with their winter skirt.  In addition to this, we are adding a transition period to change over from the winter uniform to the summer uniform. This will occur in Week 7 of Term 3, and at this time, students may wear either their summer or winter uniform.

A reminder that the College blazer is to be worn to and from the College every day when in formal uniform, and that the soft-shell jacket is only to be worn with the PE uniform.

Thank you for supporting your child in meeting our College uniform expectations.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Mrs Liz Illingworth

2024 Martin-Lyall Scholarship

The Martin-Lyall Scholarship arose from the generosity of the late Mrs Rosemary Gleeson-West in memory of her parents, Mr Athol Winton Martin and Mrs Maida Kathleen Lyall, who both lived and worked in Tasmania.

Sadly, Mrs Gleeson-West passed away in 2016, however it was her wish to continue the scholarship via her Estate.  Mrs Gleeson-West had a great affinity for both the Tasmanian and St Patrick's College communities and her generosity will always be fondly remembered.

Two students from both Year 10 and 11 will be awarded the scholarship, which is a once off contribution of 50% of the net annual tuition fees at St Patrick’s College and will be credited in January 2024.

Year 10 and 11 students and parents/guardians have previously been emailed information on how to apply for the scholarship. This information is also available on the Schoolbox student and parent/guardian portals.

All applications are strictly to be received by 5:30pm on Friday 18 August 2023.

I look forward to receiving many applications.

Mainland University Applications Now Open For 2023

To apply to mainland universities, you need to apply in the state where you want to go to university – NOT in the state where you live.

For mainland university applications, you need to go through a University Admissions Centre for each state and make an account before you apply. There are one off application fees for each Central Admissions Centre which vary from each state.

Tertiary Admissions Centre

Cost

VTAC - Victoria

$55

QTAC - Queensland

$55

UAC - New South Wales & ACT

$80

SATAC - South Australia & NT

$60

TISC - Western Australia

$88

The good news is that applying in more states can INCREASE your chances of getting a place, because you can nominate the maximum number of preferences in each state. This is particularly important if you’re considering a competitive course, like medicine or law.

Mainland School Recommendations/Early Offers – apply directly to universities BUT you are still required to create an account at specific University Admissions Centres for each state. Check prerequisites, entry requirements and closing dates as they all differ.

International Society for Technology in Education 2023 Conference

By Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

By Matthew McGee, Head of Learning – Innovation & Integration of ICT across the Curriculum

I recently had the incredible privilege of attending the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) 2023 conference, held in Philadelphia, USA. I am thrilled to share the highlights of this transformative experience.

Held in late June, the conference gathered educators, technologists, and enthusiasts from around the world to explore the latest advancements in educational technology. The event was a hub of innovation, featuring a diverse range of sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities.

One of the key takeaways from the conference was the emphasis on leveraging technology to enhance learning outcomes. Presenters demonstrated cutting-edge tools and techniques that facilitate interactive and personalised learning experiences. These insights resonated deeply with my passion for creating engaging classroom environments.

A standout session discussed the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in education. Speakers elaborated on how AI can be harnessed to provide personalised learning pathways, assess student progress, and even predict learning gaps.

The expo floor was a treasure trove of emerging technologies. From immersive virtual reality experiences to interactive educational apps. I was astounded by the array of tools available to educators today. Exploring these offerings first hand helped me envision new ways to engage students and facilitate deeper learning.

Networking at ISTE 2023 was a highlight in itself. Meeting educators from different countries and educational districts across America, and exchanging ideas was invigorating. Sharing insights, challenges, and successes with like-minded individuals reaffirmed my commitment to driving innovation in education at St Patrick’s College.

In conclusion, my time at ISTE 2023 was a remarkable journey that expanded my horizons and enriched my understanding of the role of technology in education. The conference deepened my appreciation for the potential of educational technology to shape the future of learning.

I would personally like to thank St Patrick’s College for allowing me to participate in this opportunity and for the following companies for their personal sponsorship donations towards the tour; Reflex Technology Group, Innovative Network Solutions, Iris Computing, and Deploy Learning.

E-Waste Recycling Program

By Mr Harri O'Toole, Sports Coordinator

By Miss Jamie Fleming, Environment Committee Coordinator

We're excited to introduce our new E-Waste Recycling Program, which has kicked off this Term 3!

In a world driven by technology, electronic waste (e-waste) is becoming a significant environmental challenge. But fear not, we have the power to make a positive change! Starting on August 11, we launched an initiative to recycle and responsibly dispose of e-waste, and we need your help to make it a success.

Why Participate?
Protect the Planet: Recycling e-waste reduces harmful chemicals and conserves valuable resources. By participating, you contribute to a greener future for all.

Educational Impact: Learn about the importance of responsible e-waste management and its environmental implications. Knowledge is the key to change!

Community Involvement: Join forces with your fellow students, teachers, staff, and community to create a sense of unity and purpose. Together, we can make a significant impact.

What Can You Recycle?
We're accepting a wide range of electronic devices, including but not limited to:

  • Smartphones and Tablets
  • Laptops and Desktop Computers
  • Gaming Consoles
  • Cameras and Camcorders
  • Chargers and Cables
  • Speakers and Headphones
  • Watches and Wearables

How to Participate:
1. Collect E-Waste: Look around your home for old and unused electronic devices that are no longer needed.

2. Drop-off: Students can bring these devices to school where there will be collection boxes in each House Head’s office.

3. Spread the Word: Encourage your friends, family, and neighbours to participate. Let's create a ripple effect of positive change!

Together, let's make a difference and show our commitment to a healthier planet. Stay tuned for updates, contests, and more throughout the Term. Thank you for joining us in this exciting endeavour.

Let's get recycling, St Patrick’s College!

Soccer

Senior Soccer – 1sts
Unfortunately, the Senior Girls encountered a challenging match that ended 9-0 in favour of Grammar.  A mix of unfortunate circumstances, injuries, and the absence of players contributed to the outcome. The opposition displayed remarkable organisation, skill, aggression, and speed, which led to some difficulty on and off the field. However, this match served as a valuable learning opportunity for the girls who are eager to move forward and focus on their future games.

The SPC Senior Boys 1sts triumphed over a physically demanding Grammar team with a remarkable 5-0 victory. This achievement brings the total number of goals scored to an impressive 15 for the year, marking a significant improvement from last year's scoring. Notably, every player on the SPC team made a positive contribution to this success.

Senior Soccer – 2nds

Round 1
Coached by Mr Paul Smith and Joe Symons, SPC GREEN Boys and SPC GOLD Boys showcased their determination when playing each other. In a closely contested match, Green emerged victorious with a score of 4-2, with Sachin Rai scoring a brace. Notable standout performances were delivered by Ezon Tsegab Berhe, Hamish Whatley, and Kurt Hoffner.

Round 2
SPC GREEN Boys faced off against LCGS 9/10s, securing a victory. The team displayed impressive offensive prowess, with multiple goals contributed by Pat Best, Nelson Clay, and Anish Rai. Abeshek Rai was exceptional with his assists and pitch distribution, while Dylan Sampier thrived in his new defensive Midfield position. The collective efforts of Tony Trucatmakksa, Fiseha Tesfalem, and Phillip Suan Mung ensured a comprehensive win against their opponents. Thanks to Jay Encarnacion for his coaching efforts.

Meanwhile, SPC GOLD Boys took on LCGS 11/12s in a fantastic match that concluded in a 3-3 draw. Stand-in goalkeepers Tom Allen and Jett Cherney made many crucial saves. Kurt Hoffner and Riley Woodland's played excellently in midfield, as did Theo Duff in defence and midfield, making a lasting impact. Oscar Layton and Christian Penny displayed remarkable progress, and goalkeeper Harry Costello had a chance to play no.9!

In the Junior Boys' division, SPC Red faced SPC GREEN. The encounter ended with SPC Green prevailing 3-1, showing the continued growth and potential of our teams.

Netball

Captained by Matilda Allen and Ava Lockwood-Roden, Our senior 1sts took on Grammar, winning convincingly 51 - 29.

With Grace Ebbelaar, Nikki O'Connor and Zoe O'Connor leading the way, our 2nds Green team played Grammar, winning 49 – 13.

Our 2nds Gold played Scotch at Scotch. With numerous players out due to injury or illness, the remaining seven girls showed positivity and versatility in their approach to the game. Emily Watts-Heazlewood and Chloe Coates worked hard in defence and provided numerous turnovers, which Amber Hinds and Ally Wilson then successfully converted with their accurate shooting. Gold steadily built on their lead each quarter, with a strong third quarter resulting in a 41-17 win.

The 9/10 Boys played their first round of the internal competition. Purple lost 17-4 to Pink, and Green won 17-0 over Blue.

Football

Last week our talented Year 7 Girls took to the main oval to face off against PHS. While it was a closely contested match resulting in a narrow loss, the highlight was the incredible achievement of scoring their very first goal!

The Boys played after them playing against PHS. While they were not successful in their endeavours, it was a valuable learning experience for our boys as they took on the challenge presented by the older and more experienced PHS team. This marks a significant milestone and a testament to their growing skills and teamwork.

Hockey

Earlier this week, our U16 boys played against QP at NHC1and the U16 girls played at SOC @ NHC2 at 7:00pm in some energy-filled matches.
