Reflection and Celebration

By Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

By Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

CELEBRATING

Our Arts Faculty has been a recent highlight at the College over the last few weeks. The Senior Art Exhibition saw many community members visiting the art space to view the high quality work that our Year 11 and 12 students have produced over the year. Our students were able to express themselves, their creativity and their story through their art. Reading the ‘context statements’ written by the students allowed the viewer an insight into the artists’ thought process and helped them to understand why they had created their pieces as they had.

Croagh Patrick also had their Annual Art Show. Once again, the calibre of work was outstanding and reflected each individual students' ability and artistry.

Our students are so lucky to have such amazing staff who work in this space, supporting them as they put together pieces that reflect and demonstrate their many talents, whilst providing them with an outlet to tell their story.

CHALLENGING

It is always tricky writing about challenges within the College. I am always careful not to communicate something that only relates to a small group of people to a whole group, this is not fair and often does not achieve anything other than harming our culture. However, sometimes by not mentioning challenges this can be interpreted as ignoring them or sweeping them under the rug.

Our College values respectful mutual relationships. So when we see some members in our community involve themselves in relationships that are not respectful, we struggle and find it hard to accept.

In a large College like ours it is to be expected that everybody will not be friends. That is okay. It is not okay to be mean, disrespectful, hurtful or unkind to another person. Sometimes I am challenged by some students within our community who think it is okay to be physical towards others, to make mean and hurtful statements, or share content on social media that is unkind. I encourage parents/guardians to have these challenging conversations with our young people. Check in on them. Are they being treated respectfully by their peers, are they treating themselves respectfully, and are they treating others respectfully?

I often think of a famous quote by Maya Angelou who said, 'Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but has not yet solved one’. I hope we can all encourage a community of kindness, care and compassion - this does solve problems.

REFLECTING

After a commemorative service for Remembrance Day at the College last Friday, 2024 Captains, Tumai Bennett and Kate Rigby, and Vice Captain, Owen Millar, represented St Patrick's College at the Launceston Remembrance Day Service on Saturday.

During the College service, Year 11 student, Emmaleigh Groeneveld, shared a personal story of her family and also spoke about leadership and service. We thank Emmaleigh for sharing her story and organising our Cadet students to officiate our service. Well done to all involved.

PROTECTING

The National Office for Child Safety has recently launched One Talk at a Time, a national awareness raising and behavioural change campaign on child sexual abuse. ‘One Talk at a Time’ aims to protect children and young people from sexual abuse by helping adults understand that child sexual abuse can be preventable, encouraging them to have ongoing, proactive, preventative conversations with children, young people and other adults in their lives. You may like to visit this site https://stpatricks.co/3R2QKvM and review the information.

COLLEGE UNIFORM

Attending St Patrick’s College is a commitment to the values and standards of our community. Our College Uniform expectations are high and so many within our community already meet this standard. It is unfortunate that there are some students who are not committed to the expectations of our College. We request that parents/guardians take the time to revisit our Uniform Expectations which can be viewed here: https://stpatricks.co/UniformP...

END OF YEAR MASS AND GRADUATION

Our End of Year Mass and Year 12 Graduation Ceremony is fast approaching. I would like to highlight that all students are required to attend this special occasion at the Silverdome on Tuesday 12 December 2023. Students are expected to arrive at 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start.

We look forward to celebrating the 2023 academic year, presenting our major College awards and acknowledging our Year 12 graduates with all our students and families.

Kind regards

Remembrance Day

On Friday 10 November, staff and students gathered in the Nano Nagle Gym to commemorate Remembrance Day. Our service was led by the wonderful members of our Year 10 House Committee. We were incredibly fortunate to have a large number of our St Patrick’s College students who serve as Defence Force cadets marching and forming a catafalque party around our memorial board. Cadet Warrant Officer with the Australian Air Force Cadets, Emmaleigh Groeneveld, was central in organising and rehearsing the cadets listed below.

Emmaleigh Groeneveld

William Colebrook-Smith

Draven Mansfield

Elspeth Wylie

Jack Gray

Sarah Colebrook-Smith

Darcy De Bruyn

Fionn Creswell

Bryce Whelan

Isaac Leslie

Henry Carls played ‘When the Battle’s O’er’ and ‘Amazing Grace’ on the bagpipes, and Isaac Pietsch, Jonty Glover and Ms Fiona Mowat led ‘The Last Post’ and ‘The Rouse’.

Emmaleigh Groeneveld told the story of her Great Great Uncle, Lance Sergeant Robert John Lincoln, who was enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force 2/1st Pioneer Battalion. Lance Sergeant Lincoln died whilst serving during the Siege of Tobruk.

Just Leadership Day

The annual Just Leadership Day was held at St Brendan Shaw College on 2 November.

This fantastic event drew together selected students from Tasmanian Catholic primary and secondary schools across Tasmania, and was facilitated by representatives from our Catholic charitable organisations including CARITAS Australia, Vinnies and Catholic Mission.

St Patrick's College was represented by 16 of our students, including the Mission Implementation Committee, and volunteers from Croagh Patrick and Ascent. Students were encouraged to step outside their comfort zone by working with their peers from Star of the Sea, Marist and St Brendan Shaw College. Students learnt about Catholic social teaching, servant leadership and the great work of the agencies who assist those in need in our world. Our SPC Just Leadership students will be involved in a planning afternoon which will address practical ways SPC can support these agencies in 2024 through fundraising and awareness-raising events and activities.

Lake Rowallan Hut - The Start of Outdoor Education at St Patrick’s College

Rowallan Hut - History (PART 1)

By Sophia Dobbs and Miss Shanelle Spencer

In 1971 St Patrick’s College made its first foray into Outdoor Education when a small group of members of the College community, led by Br Trevor Parton, joined together to build a hut at Lake Rowallan in the Tasmanian Highlands. The hut was built on land leased from the Forestry Commission for the grand sum of $2.00 per year.

The hut was used to provide outdoor educational opportunities for the College’s students and others in the local community. More detail about visitor’s adventures can be found in the below article.

After many years of use, unfortunately the hut fell into disrepair and an inspection in 1995 found the hut had burnt to the ground. The College decided to end its lease of the land. Fortunately, the demise of the Rowallan Hut was not the end of Outdoor Education at St Patrick’s College, and camps continue to be an important part of the curriculum.

Rowallan Hut - History (PART 2)

By Amilie Courtney

Now, we delve into stories from the hut’s log books which are held in the College History Room.

Thankfully, the log books survived the fire that destroyed the building, and were cared for by Br Trevor Parton until he kindly donated them to the College Archives so we can all enjoy fascinating insights into activities at the hut. While the Rowallan hut was sometimes described as cold and wet, with one unimpressed visitor even calling it “The saddest [place] I have ever had the misfortune of staying”, most visitors seem to have enjoyed their time at the Lake. Another visitor described it as a “Stunning hut in perfect conditions”.

An entry from 28 - 29 December 1972 by St Patrick College's very own Mr Patrick McManus’ father shows us the kind of food they ate at the hut:

“A scrumptious meal was prepared: Steak/Chops, Potatoes mashed/cooked in jackets, Onions fried/cooked in jackets, peas, mushrooms, soup, custard and pears. After that we built a huge fire and listened to recorder playing (by an unnamed member).”

Popular activities at the hut included: walks “we trekked past Snake Lake then Lake Explorer”, fishing trips, “on a log, after about 2 minutes he landed a 12-inch Rainbow Trout”, and some studying of the local flora, “Trigger plant stylidium and Greenhood orchids Pteristilium in evidence. Also large scaly buttons, bluebells and a very common white flowering herb.” The entries in the log book certainly paint a picture of lots of adventures had in the outdoors, a legacy that continues in the College's Outdoor Education offerings today.

If you have any stories from visiting the hut, we would love to hear them.

    Wellbeing & Leadership

    Uniform Expectations

Mr Patrick Moroney, Deputy Principal – Wellbeing and Leadership

By Mr Patrick Moroney, Deputy Principal – Wellbeing & Leadership

We are a community that aims to display our values by our actions. A practical way that we can show that we belong and share a common relationship with the College is through our uniform. Our uniform also offers us visible links to our Founders and traditions. It is neat, tidy and practical when worn correctly and one that we should be honoured to wear.

As we have begun Term 4 and start to appreciate all that summer promises we still would like to emphasise our high expectation in regard to school uniform.

    Uniforms

    Blazers

These are an iconic part of our uniform. Students are expected to wear them to and from school every day with a check in Tutor group each morning. If the weather reaches 25 degrees or above, the afternoon journey home may be set as 'blazer free'.

We have allowed PE uniform to be worn every Thursday for the entire College. Full school uniform is expected for every other day unless a lesson or particular activity warrants its use. This allows a midweek wash of the uniform if necessary.

PE uniform may include College branded track pants or shorts of appropriate size and length, with a sports jacket or hoodie with white socks.

    Piercings

Piercings are allowed in ears but not on any other part of the body. The size, number and style should be in line with the College Uniform Protocol.

    Hair

Hair should be neatly groomed and tied back. Extremes of hair style in colour and cut are not supported by the College.

    Facial Hair

We expect our young men to be clean shaven when attending the College.

    Skirts

We expect the size and length to be appropriate for the wearer and following the College Uniform Protocol.

For further information, please refer to the 2023 Uniform Protocol here: https://stpatricks.co/UniformP...

    Schoolbox Pastoral Care Records

We are excited to announce that in Term 4 this year we will be trialling sharing some schoolbox pastoral care notifications with parents and guardians.

These will initially consist of Level 1 House Head interventions which include lunchtime detentions for behaviour, uniform or late infringements.

As 2024 approaches we will be aiming to share teacher pastoral records that involve incidents around behaviour and coursework in the classroom.

Parents are encouraged to check their schoolbox settings and adjust to receive notifications for pastoral care records.

For instructions on how to do this, please visit the link here: https://stpatricks.co/47fQAGM

    Rowing Report

    Mr Deon Birtwistle, PIC Rowing

By Mr Deon Birtwistle, PIC Rowing

     Year 7 IntRow - 20 and 23 September 2023

On September 20, we welcomed 22 new rowers to try rowing as part of our Quick Start IntRow program. So far, 18 new young students who are still finishing Year 6 have committed to the challenge and are preparing for the regatta season. All families have embraced the rowing lifestyle and are showing great enthusiasm and support.

    Rowing Camp - 27, 28 and 29 October 2023

In line with tradition, early morning on Friday 27 October we set off to Lake Barrington on the bus. We were blessed on day one to have idyllic conditions for rowing. During camp we rowed between three-five sessions per day, walked the infamous 3.6km with 200m elevation hill, announced our Rowing Captains, Elenoa Ravai and Jasmine Axman-Friend, and relaxed when possible next to the peaceful lake.

A number of parents kindly catered all meals and donated muffins for snacks, which had a massive impact on the team. We also celebrated two birthdays with cake for dessert.

Our new Year 7s experienced rowing singles sculls, practising falling into the lake and then climbing back into the boat, alongside eager experienced rowers (and some coaches) showing them how it is done. All agreed that this camp was one of our best, which made it hard to pack up and leave Sunday afternoon.

Blessing of the Boats - 4 November 2023

We came together on Saturday 4 November for the annual blessing of the boats. With the unveiling of our new boat also occurring on the day, the event had a great turnout of families. Named after former Principal, Mr Tony Daley, the boat immediately helped to lift our spirits and competitive drive.

We are extremely fortunate to have this international boat lay in our shed. The boat range will benefit both Senior and Year 9/10 students, now and into the future. This emulates Tony’s values of investing in the future of our students to see them perform at their highest level.

    State Regatta Two - 11 and 12 November 2023

Year 8 students, Samuel Dettmer and Jasper Twitchett, started the season campaign for our young rowers by competing in the State Regatta Series. This higher level of racing is held on the Franklin River in Huonville Tasmania, and the student rowers competed with and against much older and seasoned rowers from across the state. A pinnacle of their racing was the Under 17 Mens double scull where they placed 1st with a commanding lead over the field of talented rowers. Sam and Jasper's performance has inspired us to look forward to more future State Regattas and School Regatta series.
