Celebrating Our Community

Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

By Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

As we continue on our Lenten way, I hope we can all journey together with hope.

Pope Francis has challenged us all to 'Journey’ as Pilgrims in life, to not stand still; to be ‘weavers of unity’ and to ‘share love that cannot be destroyed’.

CELEBRATING TOGETHER

Celebrating as a community is important for creating and growing our connections together. Our St Patrick’s Day celebrations held last week are an important part of celebrating who we are as a community, acknowledging our past and our Founders, and looking to continue to develop connections and relationships within our Tutor Groups, House Groups and as a whole College.

We celebrated a beautiful Mass together led by Fr Ben Brooks and the Commissioning of our Year 12 Leaders and Investiture of our Student Executive.

College Captains Georgia Millwood and Fletcher Crosswell challenged us all. Georgia spoke to us about our College Value - Relationships:

“One of our College values is relationships. Our College definition of this is that we 'value a school where partnerships between parents/guardians, students, staff, parishes and the community are fostered and developed'. But I believe these connections that we have go beyond this. Connections through Tutor groups, sub-House groups, co-curricular groups and the friendship groups that we form all have value that bring individuality to our community. Even if we don’t realise it yet, the relationships we build within these groups are so important. There will come a time, especially for the Year 12s, when you will only have one more Tutor group or one more House Carnival to go and you may find yourself missing the connections that come with these events. So today bring your energy, appreciate those connections around you and just enjoy this time we have this afternoon.”

And later Fletcher challenged us all to have an attitude that was worth catching:

“Before I leave you today and we go celebrate St Patrick's Day together, I want to leave you with a quote that I want everyone to take in. Someone once said this to me, and I will never forget it. A famous Australia cricket captain by the name of Steve Waugh once posed the following to his team: “Attitudes are contagious, is yours worth catching?" Today, let's get our attitudes contagious for what's coming up this afternoon. But also for this year. Let's help one another as a community to get all of our attitudes contagious. One more step at a time, we can make our school community even better than it already is.”

As a College we appreciate the wisdom and experience of our young people and embrace opportunities for them to step up and lead - we certainly see this on a daily basis and are proud of each and every one of our students.

SCHOOL EFFECTIVENESS SURVEY - MONDAY 24 MARCH - FRIDAY 4 APRIL 2025

Insight SRC is conducting a survey on behalf of your child’s school (St Patrick's College) and Catholic Education Tasmania. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents/guardians perceptions of their child/ren’s experience of school. The results will benefit everyone within the school by providing valuable information about the ways in which the school can plan programs and activities to improve your child’s experience at school.

Although we strongly encourage you to participate, your participation is voluntary. It is important to remember, however, that the success of this important project is dependent on parents’/guardians’ involvement.

You will receive login information that will enable you to complete this survey. The online survey can be accessed between Monday 24 March to Friday 4 April 2025. You may complete the survey at your convenience during this time. We really appreciate your contribution to our continuous improvement as a College.

COLLEGE CAMPS AND RETREATS

Thanks to the commitment and care of our staff at St Patrick’s College, and under the leadership of Mr Dave Hayward, we are able to offer a fantastic Camps Program. Already our Year 9 students have had the opportunity to attend camp in their Home Groups.

In the coming weeks, our Year 11 and Year 12 students will attend their Retreats. We thank you in advance for supporting these excellent programs. During the Year 11 Retreat, students participate in a two day/one night program based on the theme of the 'Journey'. The 'Journey' will connect our students with their in-class learning on pilgrimage, and explore the theme through the lens of personal history, shared values and affirmation. The Year 12 Retreat allows our students the opportunity to immerse and engage in what it means to be St Patrick’s College people, and allow our students to renew their connections with self, others, and our Catholic Identity.

Our Year 8 students will be attending House based camps on Wednesday 26 - Friday 28 March. These camps are a brilliant opportunity for all students to challenge themselves, maybe step out of their comfort zone and stretch themselves to develop and grow relationships. Relationships with other students and staff, whom they will work closely with over their journey at St Patrick's College.

We are so looking forward to working with all our Year 8 and Senior students at the upcoming Camps and Retreats. We thank all our families for committing to both the Camp and Retreat programs and for understanding the importance of them for the journey of your child/ren as members of our Community.

ROWING, CRICKET, BASKETBALL AND MIDNIGHT

Last Saturday was an amazing day at Lake Barrington for the Annual Head of the River. Congratulations to all our rowers on an amazing season. Thanks to our Rowing Coordinator - Mr Adam Symons, and to our Rowing Captains - Meg Rickerby and William Symons. Saturday was certainly a shared celebration of our Rowers' commitment, skill and successes.

Congratulations also to the First XI Cricketers who, as Northern Premiers, travelled to Hobart to play Hutchins in the State Final last Friday and Saturday. Although we didn't come away with the State Premiership, the boys displayed excellent skill and sportsmanship. Thanks to our 2025 Cricket Captain Ethan Arnott for his leadership.

On Wednesday afternoon our Senior 1sts Boys Basketballers played Launceston Grammar for the Northern Premiership. Captain Archie Cooper led the team with determination, narrowly missing victory by just four points in a hard-fought battle.

Midnight: The Cinderella Musical is coming along swimmingly. With many staff and over 150 students (including 40 Year 7 students) we are so looking forward to Opening Night on Wednesday 30 April. Make sure you purchase your tickets and don't forget to bring everyone along for this amazing showcase of St Patrick's College talent.

Enjoy your weekend.

Senior School Update

Mrs Rachael Holloway, Head of School – Middle School

Ms Rachael Holloway, Head of School – Senior School

Last week saw the 5th anniversary of a day that will forever be etched in my memory: the day we asked students to go home and not return due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our current Year 12 students had just commenced their High School journey in Year 7.

There is absolutely no doubt we are still seeing the effects of this time and the influence it has had on their educational outlook. Earlier this week our Principal shared an infographic via Schoolbox showing how quickly absenteeism adds up to a significant amount of lost learning time. I have also written about this in newsletters previously. Whilst there is a clear correlation between attendance and academic success, it is also clear those early days of high school spent Learning@Home left many students feeling they could succeed from home or feeling disconnected or unmotivated throughout their high school years. Five years on it is just as important that we continue to work together to support our young people to attend school, connect with their peers and the College, and feel inspired to succeed.

I regularly write about the importance of attendance at College events, such as St Patrick’s Day and Carnivals in regards to this sense of connection. Congratulations to our Year 11 students, who had the highest attendance rate of the Senior School at last week’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations. We also had a wonderful atmosphere and attendance at the Senior School Athletics Carnival. I am writing this before the Swimming Carnival, but hopefully when you are reading this newsletter we have just had a successful day at the Aquatic Centre.

Over the past two weeks all Senior School students have been invited to complete a survey about how their start to the year has gone. The survey helps us to understand what is working well for students and how we can better support them. Many of our Year 10s have told us they are enjoying the range of subjects and the increased amount of freedom the Senior School provides. While they have found the increased workload and the number of students challenging. Our Year 11 students have also struggled with the step up in work but they appreciate the knowledge, dedication and organisation of their teachers. Getting the balance between school, work, and life is difficult for many Year 12 students but they relish the opportunities to spend time together. The Senior School Leadership Team will be using this data to drive our whole school planning, but we will also be working with individual students to ensure they feel supported and are able to reach their full potential.

Next week is one of the highlights in the Senior School calendar with Retreat Week. The provides students with an opportunity to focus on their spiritual and mental wellbeing as well as strengthen existing friendships and even develop new ones. It is also a wonderful opportunity for staff to get to know students outside of the classroom context. We look forward to seeing every Year 11 and 12 student each day.

Relay for Life: Celebrating 25 Years in Tasmania

By Mr Harrison Mills & Mr Jack Prosser, Team Captains

Relay for Life is celebrating its 25th anniversary in Tasmania! This event brings communities together to honor and celebrate those who have overcome cancer or are currently undergoing treatment, as well as the dedicated caregivers who support them. It also provides a special opportunity to remember loved ones lost to cancer.

St Patrick's College has been a proud supporter of this event for nearly all of its years in Tasmania. Once again, we have registered a school team, and we warmly invite students, families, staff, and other members of our community to join us in this meaningful cause.

Together, we will walk or run laps around the track to raise funds for the Cancer Council Tasmania. All donations will remain in the state, with a fundraising target of $150,000 for the Launceston event.

This year, Relay for Life returns to the St Leonards Athletics Track and will operate for 12 hours, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, on Saturday, April 5.

In addition to doing laps on the track, there will be live entertainment, food vendors, and activities for kids throughout the day, making this a fantastic event for the whole family. Whether you’re doing laps for a loved one, enjoying the entertainment, or indulging in some delicious food, there’s something for everyone!

To join the team, please use this link: https://www.relayforlife.org.au/fundraisers/StPatricksCollege5988

For more information or questions about joining the team, please contact Harry Mills at hmills@stpatricks.tas.edu.au or Jack Prosser at jprosser@stpatricks.tas.edu.au

We hope you’ll join us for this incredible community event!

Rowing Report

Mr Deon Birtwistle

By Mr Adam Symons, Head of Rowing

Saturday 15 March saw the St Patrick's College Rowing team compete for the last time this season as a whole group, turning out for the annual Head Of The River regatta, held at Lake Barrington.

The morning greeted us early, dark and a little chilly, but with fantastic conditions for rowing. Our day started fantastically, with early wins in doubles, quads and singles. From there the success just kept coming; SPC crews placed 1st in thirteen races, 2nd in three races, and 3rd in seven races - a fantastic effort from just 42 entries. It was heartwarming to see all of our rowers cheering on their team mates across all age groups - inevitably leading to a few sore throats! No matter the placings that each rower achieved, every athlete competed with courage and determination, showcasing the hard work they have all put in over the last season of training.

Not only did we enjoy some great racing, this regatta is also about fostering a sense of community for our club. As in previous years, our families all contributed various tasty sweets and treats for a shared morning tea, with Peter, Kristin and helpers working the barbecues into a frenzy for a delicious lunch. A further tradition for our club is the guard of honour formed by our rowers to guide our Senior crews to the water for their eights race. This year we were once again joined by the Green Berets drumline, adding a special touch to the last Senior races for the green and gold (and perhaps distracting our opposition!).

The Head Of The River was a fantastic end to the main school rowing season, and made us all keen to see how some of our crews fare at the upcoming Nationals in two weeks. A huge thank you to all our helpers on the day (particularly those on regatta day duties, in the canteen and helping out with lunch), our Green Berets, Mrs Illingworth, Mrs McInnes and Mr Britton for joining us for the day, and to all our families and rowers for a great day at the lake.
