Happy Easter

Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

By Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

HOLY WEEK AND EASTER SUNDAY

Last Sunday, we celebrated Palm Sunday and entered into Holy Week, spanning from Palm Sunday to Holy Saturday. Holy Week is the final stretch before Easter Sunday, the celebration of Jesus' Resurrection. During this sacred week, Catholics pray and reflect on the profound journey of Jesus’ suffering, sacrifice, and victory over death.

Yesterday we gathered as a College Community to pray and reflect together in preparation for Easter.

I wish you all a Happy Easter and hope that each of you are able to find some time with family and friends over this period to renew, refresh and reflect on what Easter means.

COLLEGE CAMPS AND RETREATS

Thanks to the commitment and care of our staff at St Patrick’s College we continue to be able to offer an excellent Education Outdoors Program and fantastic Retreat and Reflection Day Program.

After the Easter Break, our Year 8 students will attend Camp in their House groups and our Year 12 students will attend their Retreat. This will be followed by our Year 11s as they attend Retreat early in Term 2. We thank you in advance for supporting these excellent programs, which add value to all we do at St Patrick’s College in preparing our students to be the best versions of themselves.

HEAD OF SCHOOL - MIDDLE SCHOOL

We are excited to let you all know that Mr Cameron Ivory will commence in the role of Head of School - Middle School at the beginning of Term 2. Mr Ivory has held leadership positions as Head of Learning - Creative Arts and more recently as the Acting Director of Curriculum - Senior School, here at the College.

We look forward to welcoming Mr Ivory to this position and to the College Leadership Team.

PARENT TEACHER MEETINGS

We look forward to seeing our parents/guardians at our upcoming Parent Teacher evening in Week 10 on Wednesday 10 April between 4:00pm - 8:30pm.

Bookings opened today at 7:00am. Please refer to the booking instructions emailed to parents/guardians on Monday 25 March for assistance.

Should there not be an appropriate appointment time available, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant teacher to arrange an alternate time.

Happy Easter to you all!

Year 7 Gather & Celebrate Days

Mrs Belinda Chapman, Retreat & Reflection Day Coordinator

By Mrs Belinda Chapman, Retreat & Reflection Day Coordinator

During Term 1, Year 7s have been guided in a playful walk through the Mass during their Gather & Celebrate Day. Each activity aimed to help students have a better understanding of the meaning and purpose of each element of the Mass.

Through these activities students learnt many things, some of which included:

  • That they are welcome at Mass just as they are
  • What a number of the postures and actions mean
  • How stories help us connect and engage
  • The meaning of the Eucharist being thanksgiving
  • How our daily lives are also sacred spaces
  • That the very word 'Mass' means to ‘go out’ and be who we are called to be and to serve others

Students also brought along a soup ingredient and our volunteer cooks, Jan and Stuart, turned them into a delicious meal for lunch. This part of our day connected with the skit as staff told the Soup Stone Story,  helping us all see how we can each bring something to the table and that we all make up the Body of Christ.

We are grateful to our Priests of the Parish, Fr Leonard, Fr Chatty and Fr Jessie, who each said Mass for us at the end of the days.

Parent-Student-Teacher Meetings

We are pleased to advise that our first Parent Teacher Interviews for the year are scheduled for Week 10 of this term and bookings are now open. We warmly encourage students to also attend these interviews alongside their parents or guardians.

The interviews are held at the College on Wednesday, 10 April, from 4.00pm until 8:30pm. Parents/guardians can access Schoolbox to read ongoing feedback comments, assessments and review attitude and application rubrics from teachers. This feedback can provide insight into your child’s progress and guide your decision as to whether you would like to make a Parent Teacher Interview appointment.

Interviews can be booked online using the online booking system PTO from 7:00am, Thursday 28 March, and bookings remain open until midnight on Monday 8 April. You were sent your online booking login details on Monday 25 March. High Impact Teaching: Expert Teacher Visits

As part of our ongoing commitment to delivering high impact teaching strategies in every classroom in 2024, we continue to embrace the Insight Project, a CET initiative which integrates the evidence based Science of Learning and Reading into our teaching practices.

In Week 10 of this term, we will be hosting expert teachers in English, Maths, Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS), and Science. These specialists will be visiting our College to offer valuable support to our teachers and teaching teams in various capacities.

Their support may include:

  • Conducting lesson demonstrations to showcase effective teaching methods.

  • Meeting with teachers to address any questions and provide troubleshooting assistance.

  • Assisting in the development of teaching resources tailored to our curriculum.

  • Observing teaching practices and offering constructive feedback to enhance teaching effectiveness.

We are eagerly looking forward to welcoming these expert educators to our College. Their presence will undoubtedly enrich our teaching practices and contribute to the ongoing success of our students.

Thank you for your continued support in our pursuit of excellence in our College.

Year 11 & 12 St Patrick's College Post School Options Expo

The Post School Options Expo is an event for Year 11 and 12 students and their parents/guardians to gather career-related information and resources. Representatives from organisations, education, employment, and training providers will be available to talk to on the night. This fun, interactive and informative event provides opportunities for students to make informed choices about their pathways beyond the College.

I invite anyone within our College community who has a business or service they would like to include in the annual careers event to contact me on 6341 9988 or email jodie.white@stpatricks.tas.edu.au.

Student Achievements

A number of St Patrick's College students recently embarked on a trip to Sydney, competing at the Australian National Rowing Championships at the Sydney International Rowing Course. We congratulate Jasper Twitchett and Samuel Dettmer who raced in the U17 singles and the double together, and Jack Clark and Edward Neville-Clark who raced in the U19 singles and doubles together. All boys also competed together in the U19 Coxless Quad Scull. Well done all!

Chelsea Tuck was recently was announced winner of Para Cyclist of The Year across all disciplines. BMX is a massive part of her life and we commend Chelsea on her achievement.

A number of SPC students have been selected to represent Tasmania in the 2024 Australian Little Athletics State Team in Adelaide next month. We congratulate:

Alexis Harmey, Grace Matthews, Halo Schulz, George Johnston and Jack Allie in the U13 team. Milla Johnston in the U14 team and Sebastian Hardinge and Annabelle Cook in the U15 Combined Team. We wish you all the best of luck.

Senior School Update

Mrs Rachael Holloway, Head of School – Middle School

Ms Rachael Holloway, Head of School – Senior School

Business Leadership author and speaker Simon Sinek discusses how leaders need to develop their ‘why?’ In other words, ask yourself ‘why’ you want to lead. On Friday I spoke with all Year 10 students about ‘why’ I am the Head of School - Senior School. I showed them the poster I have on my wall, next to my desk, to remind me every day why I do what I do: to help every student be the best version of themselves. There are many ways in which the College supports students to be the best version of themselves. The College Pastoral and Academic support services, limiting mobile phone use, wearing the correct uniform, and interacting respectfully with staff and peers are just some of the ways we support students to flourish.

While I was talking to the Year 10 students, many of our most senior students were being acknowledged for their leadership roles within the College. These included our co-curricular Captains and Emerging Leaders. We wish each of these leaders well in achieving their ‘why?’.

Next week will see Year 12 students embark on their final Retreat. During our weekly meeting with the College Captains and Vice Captains, Mrs Illingworth and I were lamenting how this is not only one of their final opportunities to spend time together as a peer group at College, but in reality, for life. As adults, we know how busy life gets and how rare these opportunities to spend quality, special time together are. Year 12 Retreat truly is a special experience and I cannot encourage students enough to grab this opportunity with both hands.

While Year 12s are on Retreat, Year 11 students will be engaging in an alternative program designed to optimise their learning and leadership skills. Whilst Wednesday April 3 is a stay at home study day, Thursday 4 April and Friday 5 April are both compulsory attendance days. The details regarding these days were sent out via Schoolbox last week.

COLLEGE CAPTAIN REPORT

Kate Rigby, College Captain

Kate Rigby, College Captain

Last Tuesday, our Student Executive organised a 'Crazy Hat Day' for the College to partake in. For a gold coin donation, staff and students were invited to wear a crazy hat to promote sun safety around the College. Additionally, a barbeque was held during lunchtime for students to purchase sausages, with all profits of both initiatives totalling more than $400.00. With the help of our student leaders, this money will contribute to Project Compassion to help alleviate poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity in the most vulnerable and marginalised communities in the world.

Cultural Co-Curricular Update

Mr Alex Wadley, PIC Football

By Mr Alex Wadley, Cultural Coordinator

We are now eight weeks into the term and activities across the College have been humming along beautifully.

The Performance Project tickets are now on sale and can be accessed via the Theatre North website. Whilst my role is to produce this event, my lack of theatre experience has meant that I am continuously wowed and impressed by what is taking place. Our dancing culture within the school is very strong, as is our drama and contemporary music; however, the Wakakirri dance piece is simply brilliant. I’ve also had the pleasure to work with our contemporary musicians who will be performing with the string orchestra. This is shaping up to be a very special moment in the concert.

Captains for cultural endeavours have now been decided upon, with congratulations to the following students selected:

Chess - Vaphei Bielu

Debating - Elenoa Ravai and Gabriella Smith

Choir - Emmaleigh Groeneveld

Ethics - Lainey Carter

Choir

By Emmaleigh Groeneveld, Choir Captain

I am delighted to welcome all of our new Choir members for 2024 and thank you to all members who have returned. St Patrick's Day Mass was a huge success for the choir and big band, with multiple new songs that were learnt. The Lord's Prayer by Sister Janet Mead was a hit amongst the choir members. Competitions are on June 3, and all members are encouraged to attend. If you or a friend are interested in joining choir, please come along on Thursday mornings at 8:15am - 8:45am in A2.

Debating

By Elenoa Ravai, Debating Captain

In the past fortnight, the senior debating teams have continued an exciting feat in fighting their cases on both affirmative and negative sides. Hosting the third round at our very own facilities brought a lively room of debaters, full of Joel's gourmet dishes and desserts. The time, effort and organisation displayed on the table far exceeded our expectations - thank you, Joel. Currently, the overall leaderboard is as follows: SPC1 has 4 points, SOC1 has 3 points, LC2, SBSC2, SOC2 and SPC2 each have 2 points, LC1, LC3, LCGS, SBSC1 and SOC3 each have 1 point. We hope to continue this winning streak and to make it to the finals at the end of the season. At one of our recent rounds, the senior firsts team also had the honour of debating with Mrs Liz Illingworth in the audience. Thank you for the parent and staff support so far.

Ethics

By Lainey Carter, Ethics Captain

The Senior Ethics Team has been continuing to prepare for our State Ethics Olympiad, to be held on May 8. Our preparation includes studying a package of different ethical cases and dilemmas, and we will present our arguments to other schools from around the state on competition day. We are all looking forward to the competition and will continue to build our skills for the day.

Parents remember, it is not too late for students to sign up for cultural groups! What cultural activities can my child participate in? The list is (nearly) endless.

  • Bagpiping

  • Future Sounds (Contemporary music/bands)

  • Chess Club

  • Debating

  • Drama Club

  • Duke of Edinburgh

  • Environment Committee

  • Ethics Olympiad

  • Filmmaking Club

  • Gardening Club

  • LitWits Book Club

  • Public Speaking

  • Student2Student Reading Program

  • Tabletop Games

  • Textiles and Design Club

  • Tournament of the Minds

  • Vinnies Group

  • Writer's Society

There really is something for everyone! Your child can sign up by accessing the cultural tab underneath their timetable on Schoolbox, or again, feel free to email me directly if you are having trouble navigating this.

Tenison Delany Report

By Makayla Lobley, House Captain

By Makayla Lobley, House Captain, on behalf of the Tenison Delany Student Executive.

As a House Captain of Tenison Delany, I hold the role of setting an example for our younger year levels, presenting and executing ideas, and fostering a supportive environment where everyone's opinions are valued. This responsibility means a lot to me as it allows me to contribute to the growth and success of our House community.

Reflecting on my experience in Year 12, I find it to be an incredibly fast-paced and demanding year. With graduation looming, the pressure to make the most of our time and fit all our ideas into the remaining months can be daunting.

Currently, our House is engaged in a spirited competition with other Houses to raise funds for Project Compassion. Recent events like St Patrick's Day and Crazy Hat Day showcased the vibrant spirit of Tenison Delany, reinforcing our sense of unity and camaraderie.

Although we may only sometimes clinch the top spots in sporting events, Tenison Delany consistently shines in novelty events, highlighting our commitment to have fun and give things a go. It's important to recognize the achievements of those in our House, such as Samuel Dettmer's representation of our House in rowing for St Patrick's College in Sydney.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this year has been the connections I've formed with peers and the close bond I've developed with my Tutor. Additionally, I'm excited about the creative opportunities presented by my subjects and the plans I have for Tenison Delany.

To my fellow students, I encourage you to seize every opportunity that comes your way. You never know what experiences or connections you might miss by hesitating to take a chance.

Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate the remaining events with Tenison Delany and the chance to leave a lasting legacy for future students. I hope that the initiatives we implement this year will continue to enrich the lives of students at our school for years to come.

SPC SOCCER - 2024 NSATIS JUNIOR SOCCER

The school soccer season is upon us. In Term 2, Middle School students will have the chance to represent SPC in the NSATIS Junior competition.

After enthusiastic numbers from sign-ups, I can confirm that St Patrick's College will be entering the following Junior teams for 2024:

  • Two Junior Boys Division 1 teams
  • Two Junior Boys Division 2 teams
  • One Junior Girls team

Boys Division 1 teams will be selected based on trials, which will take place in Week 1, Term 2. Selected players will be required to train during the season, to a limited schedule to be negotiated with their coaches.

FUTSAL

After we couldn't participate in 2023 due to a calendar clash, I am pleased to announce that St Patrick's College will be participating in this year's School Futsal Titles, to be held in Launceston on 30 May.

We will endeavour to enter both a boys and girls team in every possible division. Expression of interest forms for students will be sent out in Week 10, Term 1.

2024 SPC SOCCER TOUR TO MELBOURNE

In the middle of the Term 1 holidays, 14 senior boys and three staff members will embark on our inaugural interstate soccer tour to Melbourne. Over four days, the tour will see the boys partake in friendly matches against Melbourne school teams, partake in high-level training sessions, attend local NPL and A-League matches, tour elite sporting facilities, and otherwise embrace the sights, sounds and culture of Melbourne through a distinctly 'soccer' lense. I look forward to providing a report on the tour in Term 2.

2024 SPC SENIOR SOCCER

Expressions of interest forms for NSATIS Senior Soccer (Boys and Girls) will go out to students in Week 4 of Term 2, with an aim to start team formation in Weeks 5/6 for the Term 3 season. Following our motivating 2023 Senior Boys SATIS title, I look forward to a very positive approach from our players in representing St Patrick's College in Senior Soccer.

SATIS Athletics Report

The early morning departure from St Patrick’s College marked the beginning of a significant journey to the SATIS Athletics competition in Hobart. Despite facing challenges such as conflicting sports commitments and injuries, the team of 60 remained resilient and enthusiastic throughout the event.

Reflecting on the previous year's impressive achievement of winning 8 out of 9 trophies, there was much anticipation surrounding this year’s competition.

St Patrick's College students demonstrated exemplary sportsmanship throughout the event, with many commendable performances. As the competition concluded, SPC celebrated success with three pennants and four shields, with notable achievements in other categories.
