Welcome Back and Reflections

Mrs Liz Illingworth

By Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

Welcome to our first Newsletter for Term 2.

Over the Term Break and during the first two weeks of Term our College has continued to be a busy place. Our College is a vibrant learning environment where students have the opportunity to not only flourish in their academic learning, but also in many other aspects of life that we believe help each of our students to understand the balance of skills and knowledge they require to be a valued member of the community. It is essential that each of our young people are competent at problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.

I believe our College promotes and encourages each of our students to strive to be the best person that they can be. In a time when we are constantly hearing of the challenges facing our youth, and of concerns about some behaviours our young people engage in, I feel positive that, in the majority of cases, our young people across Years 7-12 are confident, competent, caring, compassionate and kind young men and women.

It is important that, as a College in partnership with parents/guardians, we continue to hold our young people accountable for their choices and for their actions. We continue to have high expectations around respectful behaviours and know that, when we all work together, we achieve the best outcomes for our young people. Thank you to those who work with us in maintaining our expectations around learning and respectful behaviour.

Recent events including the ANZAC Day March and Service, our Easter Liturgy and our fabulous production of Midnight: The Cinderella Musical, have been opportunities where our students have shown they value and respect themselves, each other, the community of St Patrick’s College, and the wider community.

MIDNIGHT - THE CINDERELLA MUSICAL

The co-curricular program at our College is essential to who we are. We encourage all our students to involve themselves in our community, and to expand and grow the connections they have with others. Midnight was a fine example of what students and staff can do together. The production involved over 150 students and staff, months of work and practice, and a full on week in the theatre. Those involved in the production were magnificent. If you saw the show you would know that it was exceptional, it was professional and you would have noticed that everyone involved had a great time.

I want to acknowledge all staff who were involved, with a special mention to Mrs Mallory Schipper, the show's Director. We thank them for the generosity of their time, without which we cannot put on such events. Thank you also to the countless parents/guardians and friend volunteers who helped in many ways.

Congratulations to our Student Leaders who were involved in the Production. To our Drama Captains Harry McKillop and Abbie Kingston, our Dance Captain Emily Hogarth and our Music Captains Jack Adams and Baxter Adams. You are each outstanding young leaders and the impact you have had on our many students has been exceptional.

Midnight was excellent and I can't wait to see what our 2027 Production will bring.

POPE FRANCIS

The recent passing of Pope Francis is a significant event for our Catholic Community. The Catholic Church has been blessed to have journeyed with Pope Francis over the past 12 years. In his time, he constantly reminded us of the value and the dignity of every human being, especially of the poor and marginalised, and he reminded us of the importance of caring for the Earth. I hope that we continue on this journey of promoting care, concern, compassion and kindness for each person.

As we pray for the soul of Pope Francis and are grateful for his work, we also pray for the College of Cardinals as they choose the next leader of the Church. We pray that they be filled with wisdom, courage and discernment, and that they choose a shepherd who reflects love and truth.

I look forward to continuing to engage with our young people over the course of this term.

I hope you have a restful weekend.

Learning & Achievement

Middle School English and HaSS

Mr Alex Wadley, Head of Learning - English & HaSS Yr 7-8

In Term 1 students have been working hard on a range of subjects in both Year 7 and 8. In English, Year 7s worked through narrative and persuasive writing in preparation for NAPLAN. Year 8s worked on visual literacy techniques, with a culminating task requiring students to use AI to create a storyboard for a fairytale, and then justifying their use of visual literacy techniques.

In HaSS, Year 7s worked on introductory Geographical and Historical topics, with this term focusing on important Historical figures from Ancient Rome or China. Year 8s worked on topics surrounding landscapes and landforms in our country and abroad. This term we will dive into Medieval History, always a fascinating topic.

Stay tuned for more English and HaSS news this term!

VET Hospitality at AGFEST

By Jonathon Ray, Head of Learning - VET

Our Hospitality team hit the ground running this term attending AGFEST on 1-2 May. We were blessed with wonderful weather as 51 students from the Certificates I, II and III in Hospitality undertook work placements, to obtain practical performance evidence for their qualifications. Glowing praise was provided from the 21 work placement hosts, with many students receiving offers for paid work with the vendors at future events.

It is fantastic seeing our students outside of the classroom, embodying the ethos of the College, while displaying the training that they have received so far.

Co-Op Schools Careers Expo

Ms Jodie White, Future Pathways Coordinator

By Ms Jodie White, Future Pathways Coordinator

Launceston co-op schools – Launceston Christian School, Launceston Grammar, Scotch Oakburn College and St Patrick’s College - are facilitating the Co-Op Schools Careers Expo, which will take place on Tuesday 13th May, from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at the Launceston Conference Centre, Door of Hope.

We invite Year 10, 11, and 12 students and their families to attend this post school options event, Co-Op Schools Career Expo, an essential event for exploring career pathways and post-secondary education options.

For Year 12 students, this event provides vital information on tertiary education, scholarships, accommodation, gap year options, apprenticeships, traineeships, and employment. The Expo offers a chance to clarify the often complex process of post-school planning.

For Year 10 and 11 students, the Expo is an opportunity to gather resources and make informed decisions regarding subject selection and future pathways after Year 12.

With over 70 providers from diverse industries, including accounting, forestry, engineering, hospitality, health, real estate, trades, aviation, emergency services, and more, the Expo offers a chance to explore career opportunities and register for upcoming apprenticeships, traineeships, and employment. We encourage students to bring their resumes to engage with employers directly as last year many students gained work experience, employment, traineeships and apprenticeships from making connections at the Expo.

Interactive displays will also be available, with representatives from UTAS, AMC, mainland universities, mainland residential colleges and TasTAFE in attendance.

We look forward to seeing you at this important event.

Student Achievements

We congratulate Darcy De Bruyn, Evan Young and Finlay Jamieson who competed in the weightlifting President's Cup Round 3 in Hobart. Evan and Finlay broke state records, while Darcy broke state and national records in the competition. They will compete in the State Championships on 5 July.

Timothy Innes was selected for the Tasmanian State Surf Life Saving Team to compete at the Australian Pathways Interstate Surf Life Saving Championships in North Kirra in April 2025. He has also been awarded the Tasmanian Surf Life Saver of the Year for his contributions to Surf Life Saving, his Surf Life Saving knowledge and skills, and his promotion of Surf Life Saving within his club and in the community. He received the award at the State Surf Life Saving Championships at Clifton Beach.

Stuart Innes was crowned the Tasmanian Under 13 Aus Cycling State Cross Country Mountain Biking Champion in the Championships held at Osmaston in early February.

Student & Community News

Senior School News

Ms Rachael Holloway, Head of School – Senior School

I hope every member of the St Patrick’s College community had a safe and happy Easter. It is wonderful to have our students back rested and relaxed, after what was such a busy term one.

Certainly, a personal highlight for me was to journey alongside our Year 11 and 12 students while they were in Retreat. Our Year 11s entered into their first overnight Retreat experience with open hearts and open minds, while the Year 12s really showed us, and themselves, what a tight-knit group they are. Their behaviour and engagement were exemplary. I don’t think anyone will forget the ‘Mass Moshpit’.

Our Senior Students were also outstanding ambassadors for themselves and the College on ANZAC Day. Students attended services and marches right across the north of the state, paying their respects to those who have served our nation. I had the privilege of marching with a large contingent of our students here in Launceston. I received several comments from the public about how lovely it was to see such a large representation, something many other schools had not been able to achieve. The St Patrick’s College students wore their uniform impeccably and with pride.

The first week of this term was dominated by Midnight: A Cinderella Story. A massive congratulations to all of our Senior Students involved in both the cast and crew of this amazing production. An absolute credit to your talent and professionalism.

Our next big event is the Senior College Ball on Satuday 17 May, at the Tailrace Centre. Our Ball Committee chose to stay with the theme of the production, choosing ‘Midnight’ as the theme for the Ball. Please ensure you have read all of the information regarding this event. This was sent out via Schoolbox on 9 April and again on 1 May. Vehicle access to the Tailrace Centre will get congested, so we encourage you to arrive early if you are coming to watch the arrivals. Parking is either in the lower Tailrace Centre carpark or at the adjacent boat ramp and playground. Tasmania Police have requested that all vehicles traveling from the south (from the CBD direction) continue through to the Pomona Road traffic lights, where there is a traffic light controlled turning lane. They have requested that no one use the Riverview Road slip road at Tamar River Villas. Police will be monitoring the area during this time, so please pass this information to any extended family and friends who may be attending.

The Year 11/12 Senior College Ball is a formal event, unlike the Year 10 Social, which is not until 22 August. Some students might be starting to think about their outfit for that evening and must keep in mind that the Year 10 Social is a much more casual affair. As such, students are discouraged from purchasing expensive formalwear. Likewise, their arrival at the event should not include special cars and a ‘grand entrance’. We encourage families to be restrained when purchasing outfits for students. This enables students to focus on spending time together, strengthening relationships.

Mid-year examinations take place in Week 8 for Year 10 students, and across Weeks 8 and 9 for Year 11 and 12 students. While this is still a while away, students are beginning to think about them and in some cases beginning to feel anxious. This is particularly the case for many of our Year 11 students. If your child shows signs of what you might consider more than a ‘healthy’ level of nervousness regarding the exams, please encourage your child to speak with their House Head or a member of the Senior School Leadership Team. Students can also self-refer to the SWSS Team by emailing: swss@stpatricks.tas.edu.au.

Wellbeing & Leadership

Girls' Night In

By Elizabeth Steven, Director of Pastoral Care - Middle School

Wednesday 7 May was a night of love and laughter as over 150 female Middle School students (joined by significant females in their lives) gathered for an evening of celebration, focusing on the joys of blossoming into womanhood and strengthening connections.

This year’s theme, “Blooming Together: Celebrating Growth and Sisterhood”, centred on personal growth and reaching one’s full potential. The notion of blossoming with the loving guidance of significant women was embraced in each organised activity. Gorgeous flowerpots were created in clay and, with the expert assistance of staff, the benches in the Art rooms showcased creativity and a light touch. Furthering the theme, delicate daisy-shaped sugar cookies were painted by hand, and carefully considered affirmations were penned by student and mentor alike. Creativity and care were then focused on the individual, and hair care and styling sessions were led by multi-talented and experienced educator/hairdresser, Arianne Cassidy. Girls’ Night In continues to grow in popularity, with rooms filled to bursting and peals of laughter heard across the Middle School and Art classrooms for two hours.

Throughout the evening, Vocational Education and Training students worked hard delivering beautiful mocktails and milkshakes, producing tasty sweet and savoury items, and ensuring students and their caregivers (and staff) were fuelled by delectable treats.

Rounding off the evening in the Guilford Theatre, St Patrick’s College staff members Ms Fawcett, Miss Robotham, and Mrs Abdul Rahman shared personal stories about women in their lives who assisted them in blossoming into the inspirational women they are today; judging from the rapt attention of the audience, their messages of love and sisterhood fell on fertile ground.

Mrs Laskey, Mrs Davie, Mr Ivory and Mrs Steven would like to extend their gratitude to all who helped ensure the success of Girls’ Night In. We are looking forward to witnessing the blossoming of our Middle School girls as they continue on their St Patrick’s College journey of growth.

Administration & Community

Green Berets at ANZAC Day

On ANZAC Day the students from the St Patrick's College Green Berets Drumline again led the 10:30am march in George Town, before participating in the 11am service. These students proudly lead the parade of returned service men and women each year, along with naval cadets from TS York. It is always an honour to be asked to lead this parade, and for St Patrick's College to also supply someone to play the Last Post and Rouse.

We also had Old Collegians Charlotte and Amelia Cox, and Cameron Rae playing in the drumline for this parade.

Next year, I would love to encourage any students from the George Town area to join us in representing the College in this important community service.

Hamish Goody (Yr 10) was presented with the Sergeant Stripe Badge for his leadership as the newly promoted Green Berets Drum Sergeant. Old Collegian and past Drum Sergeant, Charlotte Cox, proudly presented Hamish with his stripes.

Friends of Music

The Friends of Music have already been busy this term providing a small kiosk for the Musical students and adults last week at the Princess Theatre.

We also had over 60 students and parents help pick up rubbish in the Agfest carparks last Sunday. Both events provided the opportunity to raise funds to assist with reducing the costs of band tours or other activities that are available to our music students during their time at SPC.

On behalf of Friends of Music, we would like to thank everyone who has given up their time to assist in any way.

We have held our first meeting for the term this week so if you were unable to attend, but would like to do so later in the term, our next two meetings will be on 3 June and 1 July at 7pm in Room A2 in the Music/Arts area. Any parent or guardian of a musician is most welcome to attend.

Chess

By Andrew Kingston, Chess Captain

On Thursday 5 April, six students from St Patrick's College Chess Club attended the first interschool chess tournament of the year, held at Launceston Church Grammar School. Each student achieved at least three wins out of seven matches, which is an excellent result.

Overall SPC placed third with the top four students Vaphei Bielu (4.5/7 points), Finn Cloudsdale (4/7 points), Sean McClintock (4/7 points), and myself (4/7 points) each receiving a bronze medal.

We all look forward to another great showing at the Term 2 Tournament, which is being held at SPC on Tuesday 20 May in Orana Hall.
