Principal's Message

Inside Out

By Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

The Disney Pixar Movie Inside Out (2015) was released at a time when I was still watching movies with my now two adult children. We loved Pixar Movies - Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Wall-E…… and the DVDs (yes DVDs) filled our TV cabinet.

Each Disney Pixar Movie carried a special message. Messages included friendship and jealousy through toys; an underdog tale of standing up to bullying; a look at fear showing that laughter is more powerful than screams; a story of profound love, anxiety and learning to let go; a look at family dynamics, midlife crises, and embracing your unique strengths. Some of the messages were definitely, in my opinion, for the adults watching, but there is much in these movies for us to all learn about life.

The movie Inside Out takes this a step further by looking inside the mind of a young girl navigating change. Its core message is important: our emotions, even the challenging or uncomfortable ones, all serve a vital purpose in helping us grow up (or grow), connect and build our character.

Over the most recent weekend, I was reflecting on the ‘Joy’ parts of my role here at the College. There is much pure joy for me in watching our community thrive. I see it when I watch our Senior students perform in the Theatre, Drama and Dance Exams; I hear it when I meet with our College Captains and Vice Captains and hear their passion, advocacy for themselves and their peers, and their desire to make the world better; I see it on ‘Speak Up Stay ChatTY Day’ where student-led activities bring our community together; I see it when I stand on the sidelines watching our students play netball with determination; I hear it when I listen to our older student coaches engage beautifully and like professionals with their younger peers; I especially see a deeper, more mature kind of Joy in moments of adversity - like watching our Senior girls and boys AFL players lose in tough close matches, but they remain gracious in defeat although extremely disappointed.

But as Inside Out reminds us, joy doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Growth requires us to face challenges and navigate the moment where things don’t go perfectly.

Lately, we have faced the challenges of students who continue to fall short of our shared College community expectations. We see this in a group of students who continue to wear our uniform poorly, students who disrespectfully use our shared toilet facilities and students who behave poorly when dressed in our College Uniform. Furthermore, the digital landscape presents its own challenges. The inappropriate use of mobile phones during the school day, and the impulse to post thoughtless, at times harmful to others, negative content to social media sites distracts from the learning environment and, as I mentioned, can cause real harm to our community.

Crucially, this digital responsibility applies to all of us. When parents/guardians post frustrations or unverified accounts about school matters on public or group social media sites, rather than engaging with us directly, it undermines the very community we are trying to protect. Just as the characters in the movie must work together to guide Riley through her challenges, we too rely on a vital partnership to guide our young people.

When you chose our Catholic College for your child, you made a commitment to partner with us. Supporting our expectations, including uniform pride, public behavior, phone boundaries, and respectful online communication, is a crucial part of that agreement. When we hold our students, and ourselves, to a high standard together, we aren't just enforcing rules; we are teaching respect, accountability, and pride in our community.

Thank you for your ongoing support in ensuring our students represent themselves, their families, and our College with pride and respect both offline and online.

Enjoy the weekend.

Parent-Student-Teacher Meetings

The College will be holding Parent Teacher Interviews in Week 10 of this term, on Wednesday 8 July. The interviews are held at the College from 4:00pm until 8:30pm. Parents/guardians can access Schoolbox to read ongoing feedback comments, assessments and review attitude and application rubrics from teachers. This feedback can provide insight into your student’s progress and guide your decision as to whether you would like to make a Parent Teacher Interview booking. Please keep an eye out for an email with details about how to make your bookings.

Interviews can be booked online using the online booking system Booked (formerly known as PTO) from 7:00am 30 June until midnight Tuesday 7 July. You received a letter this week with your login details. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to make their bookings early as the appointment schedule will be more convenient the earlier you go online.

The Booked website portal is available by clicking on or typing the following link in your web browser: https://bookings.parentteacheronline.com.au/?school=aprmz Interviews can also be made by using the Booked Mobile App. The App can be downloaded on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store and you can find St Patrick’s College using the code: aprmz

Senior School: Planning Your Future Pathway & Subject Selections for 2027

Year 10 Students

Year 10 Futures Days: Year 10 students are participating in a Futures Day on Thursday, 9 July in Week 10 this term. Futures Day provides students with an opportunity to gather information and make informed decisions regarding school subjects, courses, and future careers in preparation for Year 11 subject selection. The Year 10 Futures Day will feature explicit information on the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), short presentations from our Heads of Learning, and an interactive mini expo, where students can have their individual questions answered by staff and representatives from different education and training institutions, industry representatives. Students are permitted to wear their sports uniform on this day, and are required to attend Tutor Group in the morning as usual.

Year 10 Pathway Planning Interviews: Year 10 students together with their parents/guardians will be invited to make an appointment to attend a Year 10 Pathway Planning interview in the coming weeks. These interviews provide an opportunity to discuss career options and possible pathways, give a more detailed and personalised explanation of the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) and Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), and advise on how each student can optimise their subject choices, including Year 11/12 TASC subjects/Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses/Australian School based Apprenticeships (ASbAs) opportunities. These interviews are held in the first three weeks of Term 3 prior to subject selections for 2027 occurring in Week 4. These interviews are highly advantageous and recommended for all students/parents/guardians, as they provide families with guidance based on your child’s teacher recommendations, interests and future aspirations. Parents/guardians will receive more information before the end of term about booking an interview time. The interviews are held between 2pm-5.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Interviews will be available with the following staff members:

  • Jodie White: Future Pathways Coordinator/Careers Advisor

  • Shayne Russell: Careers Advisor

  • Luke Wescombe: Careers Advisor

  • Ryan Wiese: Director of Year 10

  • Kate Rockliffe: Curriculum Director - Senior School

  • Rachael Holloway: Head of School - Senior School

  • Lindsey Hills: Deputy Principal: Learning and Achievement

  • Kirsten Christie-Johnston: Inclusive Learning Coordinator Year 10

  • Andrew Agardy: EAL Learning Leader

Students who would like to book an appointment time during school hours and are unable to be accompanied by their parents/guardians may do so through any of the abovementioned staff members, or can see Mrs Nicole Cullen who is located near the Front Office.

Year 11 Students

Subject Selections for Year 12 & Pathway Planning:

Year 11 students and parents/guardians will also be invited to make an appointment to attend a Pathway Planning interview, either with their child after school or for Year 11 students on their own during the school day. These interviews are designed for Year 11 students who need some support and guidance to assist them with their subject selections for Year 12.

The interviews are held between 2pm-5.30pm on Wednesday afternoons in Weeks 2-3 of Term 3. Interviews will be available with the following staff members:

  • Jodie White: Future Pathways Coordinator/Careers Advisor

  • Kate Rockliffe: Curriculum Director - Senior School

  • Lindsey Hills: Deputy Principal: Learning and Achievement

  • Rachael Holloway: Head of School - Senior School

  • Andrew Agardy: EAL Learning Leader

  • Leonie Smith: Director of Inclusive Learning

Year 11 students may also book in to see any of our Careers Advisors outside of these times as usual. They can do so in person (Future Pathways are located in the Library) or by emailing careers@stpatricks.tas.edu.au.

Year 9

We invite all Year 9 students and their families to an information session on Pathways into the Senior School:

Tuesday 30 June (Week 9)

5:00 – 6:00pm
Chapel, St Patrick's College

This session is designed to support families as you begin to think ahead to Years 10, 11 and 12. It’s a great opportunity to:

  • Hear about the different pathway options available in Year 10, 11 and 12

  • Learn about the difference between TASC and ACARA subjects and our VET offerings

  • Gain a head start on important decisions before the Subject Information Evening and subject selections in early Term 3.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Mid Year Examinations

Our Senior School examinations are underway in Weeks 8-9. We wish Year 10, 11 and 12 students the best, and look forward to celebrating their efforts and achievements when the Mid Year Examination concludes mid way through Week 9. Please note that assessment feedback will be available on Schoolbox by the end of Week 2 of Term 3.

Music Co-curricular

From the Music Captains

By Victoria North and Carmen De Michiel-Burnham - Music Captains

Launceston Competitions

It is always a fulfilling experience attending the Launceston Competitions - both watching other individuals compete, and competing ourselves. As young musicians, we are incredibly lucky to have this exciting opportunity to showcase the music we have been working on to others and receive helpful critiques. Having opportunities like this is really important and special, as it is a chance for us to show support and give deserved congratulations to other musicians, and it provides us with a goal to work towards and another occasion to perform. Within the College, the dedication and diligence of students and staff paid off, as we were able to achieve great results in a variety of sections. Everyone who participated should feel incredibly proud of themselves. Congratulations to all!

Concert Band Dinner & Presentation Night

On 13 May, 84 members, including parents and guardians of Concert Band, got together for our annual potluck dinner and badge presentation night, as well as the grand reveal of our 2026 Interstate Tour location. This dinner is an important tradition as it helps new families of Concert Band to get to know each other and create new friendships, forging a strong sense of community which is necessary for such a high level band. One of our get-to-know you activities was moving around and sitting next to someone you don’t know and starting a conversation. Looking around and seeing so many smiling faces around Orana Hall was a beautiful sight! This year, 16 new members joined us and were presented with their badge on the night. These students were officially welcomed by the band, and reminded of the responsibilities that come with being in a senior ensemble, while being presented with their badge.

The 2026 Interstate Tour destination was also revealed, and this year Concert Band, Little Big Band, and Mini Drumline will be heading to Victoria from 9 to 15 August! Overall, it was a very enjoyable night, with lots of socialising, laughter, and excitement of welcoming our new members.
