Celebrating 40 Years of Co Education At St Patrick’s College

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF CO EDUCATION AT ST PATRICK’S COLLEGE

Tomorrow we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Co Education at St Patrick’s College. This is a day when we acknowledge the contributions of the Presentation Sisters, the Sisters of St Joseph and the Christian Brothers who all courageously brought Catholic Education to Launceston when they opened Sacred Heart College, St Thomas More's and St Patrick’s College.

In February 1873, the Presentation Sisters began teaching pupils at their convent in Launceston. With its small beginning, Sacred Heart College was established. The growing need for the education of Catholic children in Launceston was further met by the arrival of the Christian Brothers and the opening of St Patrick's College in York Street in 1919. The third branch of this educational tradition began with the establishment of St Thomas More's School, Newstead, under the auspices of the Sisters of St Joseph in 1938. The schools grew as the Religious Orders made a significant contribution to the Catholic community of Launceston. Despite the hardships of earlier years, the Catholic community continued to invest in the education of their children. In 1958 the Christian Brothers opened a new campus for St Patrick's College at Prospect Vale. This became a secondary college for boys.

Further financial strain and the challenges of a more extensive curriculum led to an amalgamation of the two secondary girls’ Colleges. In 1978 Sacred Heart and St Thomas More's joined to form Marian College. Finally, in order to provide a continued high standard of education for Catholic families, a further amalgamation of schools occurred when St Patrick's College and Marian College joined to create the new co-educational secondary College which is St Patrick's College today. This major shift in Catholic education took place at the beginning of 1984 heralding a new era of enthusiasm, vision and endeavour. In 1998, the Year 7 classes left the Newstead campus and joined the other classes at Prospect, completing the amalgamation process to a Catholic college on a single campus.

The College today is a thriving place, educating 1548 students in 2024 and employing over 250 staff. As a College we are a significant contributor to the Launceston community and well respected for our Catholic Identity, our Educational Programs and our outstanding facilities. We look forward to the innovations that will occur over the next 40 years.

FAREWELL TO OUR YEAR 12 GRADUATES OF 2024

In Term 2, our 2024 Student Executive presented the whole school Assembly. At this same time, they launched their theme for 2024 - 'Unmask the Real You'. As a College community, the Student Executive challenged us all to take off our masks, to be brave, to be ourselves, to be vulnerable, to show up as ourselves, to be authentic and to be courageous.

Over the next few days we will be farewelling our Year 12 Graduates of 2024. We are proud of each of them and their achievements over their time at St Patrick’s College. As a College we wish them well, we encourage them to be themselves, daring and courageous as they venture away from the security of our community to new starts.

Next week will be one of celebration and reflection for our Year 12 students, staff and you, their families. We look forward to the many planned opportunities to celebrate and farewell our students within their Year, Tutor and House Groups and at Mass on Thursday night, followed by the Valete Celebration. We know that our students will maintain high standards and participate over their final week respectfully.

The final opportunity to celebrate our Year 12s again, along with their parents/guardians, will be at our End of Year Mass and Year 12 Graduation Ceremony on Thursday 12 December, at the Silverdome.

END OF YEAR MASS AND YEAR 12 GRADUATION

Our culminating event for the College Year is our End of Year Mass and Year 12 Graduation, which will be held at the Silverdome on Thursday 12 December commencing at 6:00pm.

All students are expected to attend this event and we hope that parents/guardians will join us for this celebration.

Enjoy the week ahead.

Learning & Achievement Update

By Mrs Lindsey Hills, Deputy Principal – Learning & Achievement

Mrs Alanna Stretton, Deputy Principal – Learning & Achievement

Science of Learning

On Monday 14 October, many of our teachers and teacher aides engaged in professional learning, to further build upon our application of the Science of Learning, with a CET led day centered on ‘Empowering Practice’. This provided us with an opportunity to further embed high impact teaching strategies into our teaching practices, and deepen our understanding and application of adjustments for students with Developmental Language Disorders. Engaging in this professional development fosters an inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive, whilst strengthening our teaching practices and enriching the educational experiences we provide to our students.

2025 Subject Selections

2025 Year 11 and 12 parents/guardians and students received their subject selection confirmations by way of email last week. If students wish to make modifications to their 2025 subject selections they can see Director of Curriculum - Senior School, Ms Kate Rockliffe, before the end of the academic year, or alternatively can email their preferences over the summer break to Ms Rockliffe, myself, or Mrs Nicole Cullen.

2025 Year 10 students will receive their subject confirmation in Week 3. We will be in a position to confirm subject selections for Years 8 and 9 in the coming weeks also.

End of Year Reports

St Patrick’s College End of Year Reports will be available on Schoolbox from 3:00pm Wednesday, 11 December 2024. The report is a summary of your child’s achievements in each Australian Curriculum learning area. More information will be forthcoming in the coming weeks. Please note that Years 10-12 Students studying VET or TASC courses will receive their achievement outcomes directly from the Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards and Certification (TASC) or the Registered Trade Organisation (RTO).

Bring Your Own Device to School – JB Hi-Fi Education Purchase Portal

As promoted at the parent information evenings, St Patrick's College is a BYOD school. To assist you, we highly recommend that you purchase from the SPC Purchase Portal via JBHiFi.

The website to access the portal is Education - JB Hi-Fi Education (jbhifi.education) and the school code is STPATS25. A flyer is attached below with these details.

On this portal, you will find a range of education-specific products at discounted prices. These products have been specifically chosen as they are the most suitable products for the use of students within schools. Typically these products are non-retail products, meaning you won't always find them in JB Hi-Fi stores. What sets them apart as education products are their stronger design and build (providing additional protection), as well as extra onsite (at school) warranties and accidental repair options.

Parents/Guardians are strongly encouraged to order early so that you won’t be disappointed. Whilst JBHiFi has ordered plenty of stock, once this runs out there will be delays with orders.

If you have any questions regarding the BYOD Portal, please contact Mr Matthew McGee, Director of Digital Learning, by email at matthew.mcgee@stpatricks.tas.edu.au.

Bandanna Day

Last Friday, staff and students from St Patrick’s College took part in Bandanna Day.

While many showed their support by buying and wearing a bandanna, others boldly braved the shave or the chop for Canteen Australia.

By coming together as a community, we not only raised awareness for a fantastic cause but also made a significant contribution to cancer research and support.

Well done to everyone who got involved.

Rowing Report

Mr Deon Birtwistle

By Mr Adam Symons, Head of Rowing

Rowing Camp

The 2024 Rowing Camp started at 7:00 am on Saturday 28 September, seeing most of our rowers depart the College on the bus, heading for Lake Barrington. Upon arrival, we were greeted with one of the best sights in Tasmania - a calm, flat Lake on a crisp morning.

After alighting from the bus with copious amounts of gear, we got straight into rigging our first boats, keen to make use of the conditions. With a successful first session done, we headed up to the hall for the first lunch from our parent volunteer catering team. The food that this amazing team put together for us the whole weekend was stunning, and much appreciated by our hungry rowers. Another couple of training sessions followed in the afternoon - some took to the water, some did land based exercise, and some sat back and watched the AFL Grand Final! A fantastic dinner and birthday celebration saw the night out, and we headed off for bed to get some much needed rest.

While Sunday started with possibly the best on water session of the weekend, the great conditions didn’t last long. Rain set in during the morning, and it was decided to pack up early. All students got stuck in despite the rain falling, and all gear was packed up within a speedy timeframe. Parents arrived to collect their rowers, dry them off, and take them back to the sheds for unpacking.

Thanks must go to all of our awesome volunteers - coaches, caterers, parents, and everyone who helped organise and run this event. It was a shortened but enjoyable time at the Lake, and a great example of the spirit present in our St Patrick's College rowing community.

Blessing of the Boats

On Wednesday 16 October, the rowing community gathered for the annual Blessing of the Boats, a tradition that marks the official start of the rowing season.

The ceremony brought together our rowers, coaches, and supporters to reflect on the season ahead, with a focus on teamwork and safety on the water.

We wish our rowers the very best in their endeavours and look forward to a successful and fulfilling season!
