Laudato Si and Reconciliation Week

Mrs Liz Illingworth

By Mrs Liz Illingworth, Principal

As part of our value of Catholic Identity there have been two significant weeks for us to recognise and act on the call to action for a better world, country, state, city and College.

Ten years ago Pope Francis wrote Laudato Si - setting out a bold vision for our common home. Pope Francis’ encyclical on caring for our common home centers on the interconnectedness of environment and social justice. Laudato Si is a call to action to all of us, to work for a more sustainable and equitable future.

Recently Sr Elizbeth Vagg, who represents the Presentation Sisters on our Advisory Board, asked us to respond to a request around what schools do in stepping towards a more sustainable and equitable future. Once we began to reflect on this there are many things we do as a College. Of course, we can always be better in this space and will continue to respond to the call to care for our Earth. Take a look later in the newsletter at environmental projects we undertake at St Patrick’s College.

Reconciliation Week: Tuesday 27 May - Tuesday 3 June

Reconciliation calls each of us to reflect and take action, encouraging all of us to learn more about our shared histories, culture and achievements, and to work together towards a more just and equitable place.

As a community we are called to be people of reconciliation, people who are open to the spirit of forgiveness, learning and justice.

As a College we are particularly proud of two or our Old Collegians, Rhyan Mansell and Ryley Sanders. Rhyan and Ryley, both proud Aboriginal men, were involved in the guernsey designs for their clubs for the Doug Nicolls Round. Rhyan for Richmond and Ryley for the Western Bulldogs. Listening to both men talk about their proud history and culture, and hearing the importance both men place on family and connection, was definitely a proud time for our College.

We have been lucky that a group of our students were able to visit the Richmond Football Club and catch up with Rhyan. Last week Ryley visited the College and chatted with some of our students.

As members of the St Patrick’s College community I encourage all of us to embrace the call to care for our common earth and to embrace reconciliation and justice for all.

Environmental Projects and Activities

Environmental Projects and Activities, to show care for our common earth, at St Patrick's College, include:

  • Waste and recycling rubbish tins across the College
  • Paper recycling
  • Attempt to reduce photocopying by staff
  • Environment Committee
  • Recently established 'The Healthy Country Project' in an attempt to regenerate the Bush Block
  • Herb and Native Garden used for our cooking classes
  • Vegetable Garden at Croagh Patrick - maintained and used
  • Limited use of text books - online texts used as preference
  • Recycling of uniform and distribution through our EAL/D Hub and House Heads on a needs basis
  • Solar Panels
  • Encourage carpooling when travelling to Professional Development or use a bus where appropriate
  • Most rooms have movement sensitive lighting so lights turn off after no movement
  • Canteen uses cardboard/paper wrapping and packaging
  • Promote purchasing of second hand clothing for our Croagh Patrick Ball
  • Irrigation system is linked to electronic moisture detectors in the ground so that we don't overwater
  • With the upgrade of the electrical substation we have moved to an electrical heating/cooling system in the ERC rather than the previous natural gas solution
  • Currently investigating "The Udder Way", to reduce the amount of plastic milk containers as we would be purchasing milk in bulk containers direct from the dairy
  • Supplying additional bike storage (internal secure storage container) and external bike racks, to encourage more staff and students to ride to school
  • All new buildings have been built around thermal qualities, with insulation and double glazed windows all helping to retain internal temperature with minimal heating/cooling
  • Heating/cooling is via a centrally controlled system and is turned on and off automatically each day
  • Purchased an electric vehicle for the grounds staff to use around the campus, rather than a petrol or diesel ute
  • Moved to electronic communication to our community: electronic newsletters, statements, invoices, etc., and Schoolbox for all internal communication
  • Implemented an electronic Accounts Payable invoicing system (Alii), eliminating paper purchase orders and paper invoices. Invoices are now emailed directly to Alii in PDF format, and approved, processed and paid without the need for a hard copy
  • Board papers are provided in electronic format rather than hard copy.

Learning & Achievement

Learning & Achievement Update

By Mrs Lindsey Hills, Deputy Principal - Learning and Achievement

Progress Reports

Parents/guardians will receive a formal Progress Report in Week 9 of Term 2. Similarly to last year, an A-E rating will be provided for Australian Curriculum subjects, criterion ratings will be provided for TASC subjects, and competency ratings for Vocational Education courses. Tutor/Home Group teachers will also provide a Pastoral Report which includes a comment. Ongoing feedback on student progress, and Attitude and Engagement with Learning ratings will also continue to be available on Schoolbox.

Progress Reports are available on Schoolbox with your parent/guardian login details. They will become available at 6pm on 26 June.

If you are unable to access Schoolbox please contact the College for support.

Parent-Teacher Meetings

The College will be holding Parent Teacher Interviews in Week 10 of this term, on Wednesday 2 July. The interviews are held at the College from 4:00pm until 8:30pm. Similarly to Term 1 Parent Teacher Interviews, you can schedule these online using the online booking system Booked (formerly known as PTO) from 7:00pm 27 June until midnight Tuesday 1 July. More information will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.

Mid Year Examinations: Year 10, 11 & 12

Year 10 Mid Year Examinations will take place on Monday 16 June and Tuesday 17 June (Week 8); these days are the Year 11 and 12 Study Days. TASC Mid Year Examinations for Year 11 and 12 students will take place across Weeks 8 and 9, between Wednesday 18 June - Tuesday 24 June. During the mid year examination period many TASC students also produce folios, oral presentations, performance pieces, practical tasks, and displays. These assessments are crucial in determining their overall performance and success, but also better equip students to handle the challenges and expectations of the end-of-year assessments as they develop their examination skills, gain confidence and build resilience in facing academic challenges.

The TASC Mid Year Examination timetable was released to students in Week 4. Further information will be available via Schoolbox and in Mid Year Examination assemblies later in the term.

Please note that results and feedback on student performance in their examinations will be published on Schoolbox in the weeks following the Mid Year Examination period, after teachers have had an opportunity to mark and moderate.

Save the Date

We invite all Year 9 students and their families to an information session on Pathways into the Senior School:

  • Wednesday 25 June
  • 5:00pm – 6:00pm
  • Chapel, St Patrick's College

This session is designed to support families as you begin to think ahead to Years 10, 11 and 12. It’s a great opportunity to:

  • Hear about the different pathway options available in Year 10, 11 and 12
  • Learn about the difference between TASC and ACARA subjects and our VET offerings
  • Gain a head start on important decisions before the Subject Information Evening and subject selections in early Term 3.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Enhanced Learning Fundamentals in the Middle School

By Mrs Anna Davie, Director of Curriculum - Middle School

This term Year 7 have been engaged in E.L.F. (Enhanced Learning Fundamentals), which occurs for the first thirty minutes every morning. All our students engage in targeted spelling, reading, writing and multiplicative thinking programs. Five lessons a cycle are devoted to English Fundamentals, and five to Enhanced Mathematical Understanding.

The explicit teaching at this ultimate learning time has seen our students positively engaging with their learning and applying themselves. If you were to walk past our classes you would see active participation, engagement, persistence, determination and fast-paced lessons occurring. Our teachers are working tirelessly to deliver meaningful, purposeful and engaging lessons to ensure students are equipped with all necessary fundamentals to grow and learn across all curriculum areas.

We look forward to seeing all our students develop as the year progresses.

Mid Year Drama/Theatre Exam Performance

Animal Farm by George Orwell

On 4 and 5 June, our TASC Level 3 Drama and Theatre Performance students took to the stage for their mid year examination performance, a bold and compelling adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, held in our College theatre.

This combined class production brought together students from both subjects, collaborating to create a powerful interpretation of Orwell’s classic novella. Although first published in 1945, Animal Farm remains as politically sharp and socially relevant today as ever.

One of the standout features of this production was the ensemble approach to characterisation. Rather than assigning fixed roles, students shared and shifted characters throughout the piece. This deliberate stylistic choice reinforced the collective themes of the story, encouraging audiences to focus not on individual journeys, but on the broader forces of revolution, control, and betrayal.

With striking use of soundscapes, physical theatre, and stylised movement, students brought Orwell’s message to life. Congratulations to all involved for their creativity, dedication, and courage in bringing this complex work to the stage.
